History of AI-OCR “DX Suite,” Evolving with a User-first Approach

AI inside’s AI-OCR “DX Suite” has been driving the growth of the business as its leading service. Since its release in November 2017, we have been expanding the usage scenarios and improving user’s experience (UX) through updates.

In this article, we look back at the history of the “DX Suite” which has grown with AI inside.

First, what is the “DX Suite”?

AI inside provides a platform where anyone can create high-accurate AI models easily without AI expertise or programming. We have several leading services. One is the “Learning Center” in which users can create AI with high accuracy without programming knowledge. Another one is the “AI inside Cube,” an edge computing service to run AI in a secure environment.

In addition, our leading service with the highest number of users is the AI-OCR “DX Suite.”

“DX Suite” can read and digitize all types of forms, including PDFs, faxes, photos, and convert them into digital data with high accuracy. You can use a function to sort large amounts of forms automatically at high speed. In addition, “DX Suite” can help you digitize items on non-regular forms issued by many different companies such as invoices and receipts.

Due to the high accuracy and easy-to-use system, the AI-OCR “DX Suite” is used in a wide range of industries such as banking, telecommunications, and local governments. It also won the №1 share of the AI-OCR market*.

Improvement on the read accuracy and speed with the support by the users

Today, it has highly accurate readings and many features, but, there were still limits to what it could do around the time of release in November 2017.

When we first started providing “DX Suite,” there were fewer items and types of forms possible to read than there are now. The users used to read standard application forms such as postcards and mark sheets. Also, the reading accuracy of “DX Suite” was not the highest and was weak with reading long sentences such as addresses and multiple lines. We needed to solve this low accuracy quickly, so we completely revised the entire architecture. Six months after its release, we were able to improve the reading accuracy and processing speed dramatically.

Our current “DX Suite” can read multiple lines and forms with patterns in the background and texts that need to be skipped over for strike-out lines.

Update and improve UX with “User First” as the starting point

At AI inside, we have our Rules of Innovation (behavioral stance), and one of them is “User First.” Based on the feedback from our users, we have developed a series of functions to make our services more convenient to use.

“User First” is the idea that the service must be utilized by users in business scenes without any problems. The more neatly the form is scanned, or the more carefully the texts are written, the higher the reading accuracy. However, not all forms are “easy to read” in actual business scenes. We have developed and enhanced the “DX Suite” on the basis of real business situations, such as read tilted forms by automatic correction and skipping the reading of texts erased marks.

Non-regular forms, multi-language support, RPA linkage, and more usage scenarios

A year and a half after release, non-regular forms such as invoices and quotations, which have different formats depending on the company, were made available to read together. This function was long-awaited by our users, and it expanded the usage scenario of “DX Suite” even more. Seven types of forms such as receipts, order forms, and salary payment reports are currently supported, and we will continue to add more forms in the future.

Also, from December 2020, “DX Suite” supports the reading of multiple languages such as English, Traditional Chinese, Thai, and Vietnamese. With the increase in supported languages, we can now provide “DX Suite” to overseas companies. The current user interface is only available in Japanese and English, but we plan to support other languages in the future.

Aside from these, in response to strong requests from local governments and banks, we have provided the “AI inside Cube,” an edge computing service that allows the use of “DX Suite” in a secure environment. By collaborating with RPA companies and companies that handle multifunctional devices, we have steadily expanded the use scenes and made “DX Suite” available to many industries and business sectors.

“DX Suite” to the next phase

“DX Suite” will not stop with its evolution here but will continue to improve UX further on. As the first step, we released the “Workflows” alpha version in April. This alpha version is a service for using AI and applications, such as “DX Suite” and the alpha version of “Digital Input.” “Digital Input” improves efficiency by putting data from web forms and paper forms in the same workflow. Users can use it in combinations according to their business process. Also, We are developing services based on the concept that AI created with our highly accurate no-code AI builder, Learning Center, and other companies’ AI to be shared in our marketplace so that users can use it on “Workflows.”

AI inside has been progressing through AI technologies such as image recognition from “DX Suite,” collaboration with partner companies and OEM companies, and the community with our users. As an AI platformer, we will continue to use these assets to make AI more accessible and easier to use.
