40% Think That AI Makes Our Lives More Convenient in Japan
Survey Results on the Impressions of AI
AI inside, a provider of an AI platform, surveyed the impression of AI (Artificial Intelligence) through a research company to investigate the situation to promote the use of AI in Japanese society. This article summarized the survey results based on people’s impressions of AI and how it is understood.

Survey results on the impression of AI
37.5% of respondents said AI “makes life more convenient”
In response to the question, “What impression comes to mind when you hear the word AI (artificial intelligence)?” (multiple answers and choices available), 37.5% of respondents answered that AI “makes our lives more convenient.” In addition, 31.6% of the respondents answered that it is “necessary for the future of society,” resulting in a relatively large number of positive answers.
The third most common response was, “It helps automate and streamline operations and promote DX (digital transformation) in business,” suggesting that the use of AI in the actual business is increasing for the promotion of DX.
MS&AD InterRisk Research & Consulting, Inc. surveyed in December 2020 on 996 people in Japan on the theme of AI (artificial intelligence). This survey result shows that the idea of AI has become more positive compared to three to four years ago, suggesting that AI is becoming more familiar and better understood within the last few years. The result also suggests that people have hopes for the future with the use of AI.

25.2% of the respondents answered that AI is “something that requires high system investment and cost.”
On the other hand, in response to the same question, 25.2% answered that AI is “something that requires high system investment and cost.” Thus, there seems to be the impression that system investment for utilizing AI is expensive or that AI is costly because of the high level of convenience. In reality, the cost of system implementation varies depending on the AI service and vendor.
While some people have the impression that AI requires expensive system investment and cost, some services allow the utilization of AI within a free-range or at a lower price and AI inside’s “DX Suite” and “Learning Center” are one of them.
21.2% of respondents answered, “I don’t have a particular impression of it / I don’t know about it.”
We can also see that 21.2% of the respondents answered, “I don’t have a particular impression of it / I don’t know about it,” which is the fifth-highest among all options. A certain number of people do not have a particular idea of AI or do not know much about AI, and further education throughout society is needed.

Survey Results on the comprehension of AI
42.9% understood AI as “a computer that learns and automatically produces predictions and other information”
In response to the question “please tell us what you know and understand about AI (artificial intelligence)” (multiple answers and choices available), the most common response was that AI is “a computer that learns and automatically produces predictions and other information” at 42.9%. Also, 29.2% of respondents understood that AI is used in image recognition, which is the second most common understanding of AI for this question.
We can see there is a fairly high understanding of prediction and image recognition using big data etc. However, at the same time, 32.8% of respondents answered, “I don’t know or understand anything about it,” which shows that there are comparatively many people who are not familiar with AI.
Although the results showed that there are a certain number of people not familiar with AI, there were responses such as “It’s possible for Individuals to create AI” (9.9%) and “It’s possible to create AI without special programming skills(7.8%). This shows that even though the percentage is still low, less than 10% of the respondents understood that they can create AI themselves.
